Tell me more...

Friday April 9, 2010 at 3:14 PM

Reviews.  Stats.  Hits.

Why do we care?

When I first started in the fandom, I didn’t even know there WAS a stats page.  Then I was lurking around as a lurker is wont to do, and I saw someone reference their stats page.  So I went and dug about and found mine.  Holy smokes, was that graph beautiful.

I had, like, 35 hits!  In ONE day!  I am not kidding you, I ran to the office to tell Dirk.  “Baby!  35 people read my story!!”  I ran out again to refresh the page.  And then I proceeded to spend the entire weekend refreshing the stats page in between reading other people’s chapters.  It was glorious.  I was SO. Damn. Happy.

Of course, over time, it took more and more to make me happy.  I’m such a junkie.

And if my new chapter got 8 reviews last time, but only six the next time, I was tempted, there in the dark of the night, with only the soft hum of the laptop for music, to reach out to those former reviewers and say ‘Hay!  Why’d you stop??”

I refrained.  (Thank Jesus.)

Then something happened.  I got really busy and I couldn’t check.  And after about a week, I realized I hadn’t been.  There were some days where I had a hundred hits, and some where I’d only had 4.

And reviews.  Oh my god, reviews.  Now, I may be a bit shy sometimes, but I pretty much always speak my mind, so it’s no surprise to anyone how much I love my reviews.  And reviewers.  Seriously – this fandom is made of such amazing and generous and TALENTED people that my mind?  Generally and consistently blown.

I get excited when someone I really like and respect reviews my fic.  And I want to tell the world:  OHEMGEE!!  So and so reviewed my fic and they liked it!  But I don’t.  Same as when someone that I’ve never heard of before writes me a review that just…blows my mind.  I want to sit them down and make them cookies or breakfast or *something*.  When one of my frands reviews my fic, I want to hug them.  **hugs**  (I’m a hugger – don’t judge.)

But my question here is this:  Why do we care?  We can’t take stats to the bank.  Reviews, while soul-feeding things, are not going to put food on the table (cue flower monologue from A Knight’s Tale).  What makes this more intriguing for me is that aside from not being able to do anything with our OWN stats and reviews, we seem to also compare ourselves, relentlessly, to others.

Now, this is a subjective thing we’re doing here.  Writing is not science.  It is not mathematics, and there is no right or wrong answer.  I’ve read popular fics that I think are just awful, and I’ve read little-known fics that make me swoon in my seat.  And when I try to compare myself to any of them, I come up short because there are too damn many variables.  (Nod to Katinki and Renward.)

So campers and rangers and writers of all ilk, I ask you this:  Why do you care?  Do you stalk your stats page?  Do you covet each and every review?  If so, what drives you, and if not, why?

In other words…tell me more, tell me more….

Music

Friday April 9, 2010 at 12:53 PM

Along with the mountain of candy (specifically, Skittles and Hershey's chocolate), books, and a DVD, my parents decided to get me a bunch of iTunes gift cards. I've spent some of it, but I'm looking for more music. I'm looking for some good/happy love songs.

What are your favorite songs?

FF.net probs?

Friday April 9, 2010 at 12:38 PM

Have any of you who post on FF.net had any problems with your traffic report over the past 3 days?  Just curious.  I am fairly new to the whole scene, and don't know exactly what to do when there are technical issues.

Breaking Dawn director

Friday April 9, 2010 at 9:32 AM

Ooh, I already hear some of you groaning....

So, even thought there is a lot about BD that I dislike I will still be going to see the movie - the making of the conclusion to the series is still, with all its flaws, too tempting for me. Someone may as well add some chocolate, ice cream and cherries to it and place it in front of me on one of my health kick weeks.

I saw this article about the 'front runner' director. I never saw Dreamgirls. I haven't seen any of his other films.

Do you think he's right for the project or not?

Do you even think your ideal director could even make a silk purse out of the pigs ear that is Breaking Dawn?

Do you think even if your choslen director could do that, with Rosenberg writing the script and Meyer hovering in the background, that something good could be made?

Virgin or Madonna?

Friday April 9, 2010 at 9:03 AM

Nah, I don't wanna know if you're a virgin or not.

There is an issue I'm putting forth though:
I am the 18-year-old virgin, attempting to be the 40-year-old virgin for documentary purposes. (I'm kidding!)

Anyway, being the romantic that I'm really actually not, I'd like to know if you lost it to music, and if so, what kind of music. And if you didn't, tell me why losing your Visa card is cheesy while listening to music.

And if there are any virgins out there, come say hi, and tell me what cheesy things you would like to happen to you right before you take the plunge!

I'm so inappropriate. :)

Does anybody else participate in NanoWriMo?

Friday April 9, 2010 at 8:56 AM

Just wondering if any fic writers do this every November.  This year will be my third.

In case you don't know, it's National Novel Writing Month.  A challenge to write 50k words in 30 days.  Then you have six months to finish whatever you write, edit it and submit it to Createspace and they send you a free book.

This was actually the catalyst to my writing a complete story and while it was stressful to make the deadline, I felt pretty good at the end.

WAM BAM THANK YOU MAM

Friday April 9, 2010 at 8:29 AM

Okay, so I just had my second midterm for my Macro class. I went in, was feeling pretty good about it, and then WAM, I got to the third to the last page, looked at the questions, and just sat there. My mind was in an uproar, 'Where did this shit come from?' I asked myself. And then I turn the page and I nearly fainted, because WTF I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON! I seriously didn't answer the equivalent of a page of questions! Thats like 25 points! So needless to say, the test screwed me up the arse, said wam bam thank you mam, and left me all alone crying my eyes out (on the inside) over the unfairness of what I thought was a sure thing.

I need hugs... and pictures of Hodgins/Zack/Booth/Cute little fuzzy animals... help a girl out?

RPattz playing Kurt Cobain? Yea, no.

Friday April 9, 2010 at 8:27 AM

Hi panicky people. Now I knew from the moment reading the words "The Sun" that the rumor wasn't true, but Gossip Cop just confirmed it.

"Is Robert Pattinson going from fanging to head banging?

The Sun raised eyebrows EVERYWHERE this morning with a report that Pattinson “has landed his dream film role — playing Kurt Cobain in a Hollywood biopic.” Noting that Pattinson “has always thought of himself as a musician rather than an actor,” the paper says “securing a part” as the late Cobain “is ideal for the pin-up.”

A hero of the grunge rock scene with Nirvana, Cobain killed himself in 1994.

According to the Sun story, Pattinson was so determined to play the part, he vigorously lobbied Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, who supposedly wants Scarlett Johansson to portray her in the project.

The paper’s “source” claims Pattinson “has been calling and emailing [Love] non-stop,” and that he is “her number one choice to play Kurt.”

So did the Sun score a big casting scoop?

Not to be “curt,” but no.

The rumor is just plain wrong. A source close to Pattinson tells Gossip Cop there is “no accuracy” to today’s report.

Nevermind."

Moral of the story, stop believing everything guys. Especially from a tabloid.

The One With Where She Blows...Out Her Candles

So we all know that today is the 20th birthday of one Miss Kristen Stewart. Since (thankfully) we don't know for sure what she's up to, MrsBing and I thought we'd share a little list of things WE hope she might be doing to mark her 20th trip around the sun.

Just for posterity, this is who what she was doing on her 18th birthday:

R: "Saaaaa-weet! Bitch is finally legal!"
K: Rob, did you just Say that. Out loud?

Top Ten Ways KStew Celebrates Her 20th Birthday:

10. Hanging out at home. "Relaxing" of course!

Just needed a breath of fresh air before I blow out all these candles!

9. Shopping at The Grove dressed incognito as the 4th Hanson Brother & smirking at the papz when they don't recognize her. Or the Hansons.

One of these kids is not like the others, one of these kids...has a vagina!

8. Getting a mani/pedi with Dakota & stopping for gas afterwards.

"U guiiiiise! Stop taking piiiic-shurs! Y'all are makin' me feel
like Britney Spears with all these gas station pics!"

7. Drinking "soda" & then going target shooting, except all the targets will look like guys from X17 or TMZ.

6. Rehearsing songs for "Breaking Dawn The Musical: Electric Boogaloo & Renesmee Too"

"I need someone older and wiser telling me what to do.
You are 17 going on 107, I'll depend on you!"

5. Renting out a theater to screen Hot Tub Time Machine for all her besties.

4. Hanging out with Jimmy. Preferably in a tree.

3. Doing the Dine 'n' Dash at one of Guy Fieri's restaurants. Payback for the Hanky Panky game on Leno, dude.

She's just so.... fast. And thorough. I'm amazed every time!

2. Putting her pussy to the wood. We'll just leave that open to interpretation.

That's not what I meant by pussy. Or wood.

1. Rob. (See #2)

Happy Birthday, Babe. Do you recognize me without my
signature Hobo-stylings? Budapest has been a bitch without you.
Now, let me show you my cane... 20 lashings.

In all seriousness, we wish the lovely, talented, totally-unique, Mistress of the Short Hemline & Stiletto, a very Happy 20th Birthday. Cheers to you babe! (well, next year anyway).

Coffee or Tea?

Friday April 9, 2010 at 8:02 AM

Just wondering what you prefer.  I'm a tea drinker myself.  I prefer black tea to herbal and have just discovered those little International Delight creamers in my Spiced Chai and Earl Grey.

It's not that I don't like coffee, but the caffeine jacks me up.  I actually like it with lots of cream and sugar.  Probably not even considered coffee by the time I'm done with it...
