John Green's Thoughts on Twilight

Sunday November 29, 2009 at 8:15 PM

So if you don't know who John Green is, he's a YA author (who's written two of my favorite books) and he also does a vlog with his brother (Hank -- who he speaks directly to in the video, js so you know who the eff he's talking to). He posted a video tonight about Twilight and I thought he brought up some interesting points.

(I really hope that worked >.>)

so what do you think about what he has to say?

This was Ranger approved.

Hi All. This is my first campire and I know everyone is recovering from the holiday week, but I am working with other authors to showcase smaller stories in theTwilight fandom and really want your help! Last time we did this, we found some amazing stories, and afterward, the featured stories and authors received a surge of readers, so we're at it again.

The world of Twilight fanfiction is vast, but frequently we see the same authors and stories recommended over and over again. Meanwhile, there are undiscovered treasures that get no loving!

For those interested, I would love to ask all A Different Forest members to supply at least (as many as you'd like) of their favorite stories that get minimal reviews or are underappreciated. This includes authors showcasing their own stories, or readers that just want to share.

However, instead of just sending a link, please sell the story in a short paragraph, or just tell us why you like it. We'll contact the author and let them know where the recommendation came from.

For fellow authors, credit and links to your own work will be included if yours are featured! I'll start first.

Examples of previous recommendations:

Disciplined Breakdown by Ahealthyaddiction

Recommendation by nicnicd: A young woman leads a carefully regimented life; she’s hard-working and successful, outwardly put together and on the surface seems to be completely in control. Inside, she runs both literally and figuratively from her demons. The inner pain and yearning that Bella portrays is tangible. Read the rest of nicnid’s recommendation on The Fictionators.

Six Silent Goodbyes by VivaViva

Recommendation by letmesign and inside-the-disarray: Ever wondered what the other Cullens thought of Edward’s choice in New MoonVivaViva has composed an amazing peek inside the minds of each family member after Bella’s life-altering birthday party. Every chapter is from a different perspective, a recollection of how the atmosphere has changed since the human stumbled into their lives, and what Edward’s leaving will do now that the relationship is over. I have never seen an author get so thoroughly entrenched in a character’s mind, and VivaViva does it with all six, giving them each a superbly unique voice and motivations to explain the flat characteristics dealt to them in canon. I was beyond impressed.

This is What Apologies Are For by Relative

From the author: A soldier will die on the field of Gettysburg and wake up a stronger, faster, more dangerous version of his nineteen-year-old self.  He will vaguely remember a name, and a place, and demand to know what happened to the girl he left behind.  He will not understand the consequences of a choice until it has already been made.  He will stand in the shadows of New York, watch another war unfold in the middle of a century he should not have lived to see, and he will remember.

Recommendations I've posted:

The Price of Balance by Averysubtlegift

A clever twist on vampire canon, this lovely story is ethereal and so well written. An impoverished young woman with a tragic past leads a sad and lonely life in the cold city. A mysterious man enters the picture, seemingly intent on balancing out some of the bad in her life. Can love truly heal deep emotional wounds and give her something to live for? Is he more than what he seems? What is the real price of balance?

The Darkness of the Cathedral by Jazz2305

The writing is lovely, with a mixture of sadness and humor, the narrative is unique and well-written. This story is a gem, a treasure. The heroine is trying to move on after a personal tragedy, while the hero looks on in want and waiting. Highly recommended.

The Tortoise and the Hare by Helliex88

This story is about learning to see oneself and others clearly, but it’s never heavy-handed or preachy. The characters are deliciously imperfect. Withdrawn horoscope-writer heroine lives in Chicago with her charismatic, successful older sister and brother-in-law. The sisters have a difficult relationship, details of which are revealed as the story progresses, but things between them are not improving. Enter the world-weary hero, recently returned to the city after having traveled the globe for several years under mysterious circumstances. The two meet at a party when she finds him half-naked on her bed, atop another guest. Drama and misunderstandings ensue, but they are far from typical. Enhanced by the must-read companion one-shot collection, The North Wind and the Sun.

The Heart of the Matter by SereneCaffeine

Life is many things. Simple it is not; especially where the heart is concerned. When Edward Cullen receives news that his fiancée died in a tragic accident, he’s distraught. But when he finds out that her heart was given to a dying patient, the insistent need to meet her overcomes him. Will he be able to move on from the one he lost and the hurt he’s suffered and find love again? And what will this patient do when she finds out that the heart she was given ripped a couple apart? Two lives suddenly thrown together must conquer obstacles in search of what they desire. How it all turns out is a journey they may have to partake together in order to discover what matters most.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHOWING SOME QUALITY FICS GOOD LOVING! P.S. If you're shy, you can email me directly at, but it would be awesome to see public praise.

So I just saw New Moon for the 2nd time and I am just wondering if anyone else seem to be disappointed that the only thing missing from the movie was Edwards Bouffant??  Is anyone else as disappointed as I am?

Happy Holiday Hangover

Sunday November 29, 2009 at 4:51 PM

Happy Holiday Hangover Sunday!
HHHS is a tradition amongst my siblings. As we travel the extensive miles to our parents’ house on Wednesday night and don’t leave ‘til Sunday, there are usually endless hours of talking, decorating, eating, and drinking accumulated before we are allowed to leave, ending in HHHS, which is when we sit around in the morning and ask completely random trivia questions until one by one we are either sober enough to leave or my mother kicks us out with containers of leftovers in hand.
Today we played an obscenely long game of Kill, fuck, marry, so my question to you campers is will you indulge me in some pointless HHHS trivia and answer the following while I’m toiling over a new chapter? There are several categories, answer as many or as few as you like, and propose your own trios!
Who would you off with an icepick, who would you screw seven ways til work tomorrow, and who would you shackle yourself with forever?
  1.  Edward, Jasper, Emmett
  1.  Carlisle, Jasper, Emmett
  1.  Jacob, Embry, Seth
  1.  Jessica, Mike, Angela
  1.  Jane, Felix, Aro

Ranger Fabulous Misses You!

Sunday November 29, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Ok you guys!  I have felt so disconnected from my lovelies over here at the Forest!  Now that all of the New Moon shenanigans are over and I had to get back to the real world.  :(

It is  HELL week for me right now!  I have a final this Friday, 2 papers due and finals Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Who else has finals?  How else thinks that college is overrated?

Why the hell was Edward so concerned about going to Dartmouth?  I think Bella had the right idea.  Turn her into a vampire and let the SHAGFEST begin!  Wish that was all I had to worry about!

To show my love...

(We will ignore Paul's bad mullet...)

Just for fun

Sunday November 29, 2009 at 4:38 PM

Who, amongst our talented fic authors, would you nominate to direct DB?

Is there someone in particular you think style might go well with the uterus tearing, bone breaking, Nessie?

Is there someone you might have read that rewrote BD in their own view that you think could do a much better job?

For those who like it lemony, is there an author you think could fill in Smeyer's fade to black tastefully, or raunchy and dirty if you prefer it that way?

please and thank you

oh yes, and some BD manips

OMG this is sofuckingcreepy

Still late to the party. How unfashionable!

Sunday November 29, 2009 at 4:25 PM

First of all, look how festive I am! Yay Christmas!

Anywho, I'm gonna assume people are still up to chatting about New Moon so I am gonna throw this one out there as well.

Let's talk Carlisle!

For starters, how fucking cute was he in this film? All those Blonde Curls? Swoon. He's now officially our little cherub vampire. I loved him in that painting scene with his high collar...looking all suave and dashing.

Over all my Calisle experience was an improved one from Twilight but I had a major WTF moment when I watched the movie. What the hell is up with Carlisle talking about vampires being damned?

Carlisle's whole schtick is that he believes in a god and that he believes that actions and choices are important with in the context of that god. I don't once recall him agreeing with the idea that they were souless damned creatures.

This really bothered me as it seems like such a central part of Carlisle and his value system. I'm assuming they cut it so they didn't have to spend the time delving further into that particular scene but I think they really did an injustice to the plot by removing it.

Talk to me about this ladies. Did you notice this as well? Did it bother you? Do you think it was an okay cut or should it have been included? How did it effect your Carlisle vewing experience? I want to know!

Notice the wings on his head...this makes me laugh. My friend pointed it out the first time we watched Twilight. It was actually an owl behind him:

Slade is making me nervous

He keeps talking about battle scenes. I want to see MORE of Edward and the love triangle. What do you think is going to happen with Eclipse?

Be self-deprecating like Rob awww

Sunday November 29, 2009 at 2:42 PM

So, I spent a few hours yesterday reading Encyclopedia Dramatica. Articles of interest: fandom, fangirl (which redirects you to fantard), and Twilight. The writers of ED will be the first to say that they're the most pathetic of the things they mock- but seriously, after reading it, i almost had a moment of butthurt.

Then I promptly got over myself.

An excerpt

"Jaded Fangirl

Around the age of 18 or 19, fantards begin to realize the sheer pointlessness of it all. At this stage they begin to write deep, soulsearchingfanfiction and post on fan message boards about how 1337 they are, and how they aren't as stupid as when they were fourteen (they are actually just as stupid but hide it behind seniority and big words like "poignant").

But seriously, we all know we're dorks here. So if you want, take this moment to make fun of yourself, share a story where you showed your internet dweeb colors, etc. etc. Or, tell me how much you love the internet!  Be a maverick and defend it!

Cause I love fanfiction, even though I would never admit it in some circles. It's the chick form of fantasy football, where we trade ships instead of wide recievers. AND I STARTED FANFICTION AFTER I QUIT POT. SO TAKE THAT THIS IS MY ANTI-DRUG

oh god

New Moon Soundtrack

Sunday November 29, 2009 at 12:37 PM

I have the Twilight soundtrack, and I really enjoy it.

The question I have is to those that have the New Moon soundtrack.

Now that you have had the soundtrack for a while now, do you like it?

I don't know hardly any of the bands that are on NM, but I didn't know hardly any on Twilight either.  So, is it any good for someone like myself that isn't a fan of some or all of the bands featured on the soundtrack?  While watching the movie I tried to pay attention to the music as best I could, and maybe it is just me since I have only seen it once so far, but I hardly noticed the music all that much.

Is it worth my hard earned money??

And if not, what song would you rec as a must have if any?

Thanks in advance guys!!

How Wierd...

  • Who is that guy besides Rob and Anna?
  • What the hell is Rob doing to Anna?
  • Why the hell is Rob doing whatever hes doing to Anna?
  • Why is the "question mark" guy mushing his face into Anna's?
  • Why does Anna look like shes sleeping?

And so many more questions are running through my head at the moment...

New Moon Dream Sequences? *spoiler*

Sunday November 29, 2009 at 9:50 AM

For everyone who's seen the movie, does anyone know what happened to the dream sequences that were talked about beforehand?

There were these quotes from Rob and Kristen:

The dream sequences are really eerie,” says Kristen Stewart, “it’s like you have something that is your idea of like perfection but you’re afraid of it while afraid of losing it, it’s like very masochistic.”

“He gets the chance to be a little bit more scary in the dream sequences. He’s not so perfect,” she continues. “One dream sequence which I don’t think anyone will expect,” says Pattinson, “Edward is this kind of demon.” “So, hopefully people will be a little freaked out by it.”

I was really intrigued and looking forward to seeing this, but it seems that these dream sequences were cut. There were even photos published from dream sequences, like with Edward leaning over Bella in bed, then Bella leaning over herself asleep in bed, but these scenes just weren't there.

Any idea why? I hope they're at least on the DVD.

(This is my first campfire!)

From Vampire To Rowing Champ

Sunday November 29, 2009 at 8:29 AM

Meet Robert Pattinson, The Rowing Champ

London: Robert Pattinson turned out to be a champ at rowing when he beat his co-star of the hot Twilight saga Chaske Spencer.

Pattinson, who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the movies, and Spencer, who plays werewolf Sam Uley in the New Moon film, had a rowing race on the set of New Moon in the weight room that was needed to keep all the actors in shape for the film.

"We were all really competitive and supportive of one another. One time, I had the highest score on this rowing machine and the next day I came in and Rob had beaten me," the Daily Star quoted Spencer as saying.

"He worked out at night, and the wolves came in during the day. I'd beat him and then he'd beat me. On the last day of shooting, I came in and he'd beaten me by a second," he added.

Who knew our guy Rob was a multitasker?

I prefer him in the real thing personally, but the idea of him on an actual work out machine - hopefully - tobless with beads of sweat rolling down his chest is also very appealing to me.

I thought Rob was bagels guy myself, but turns out he is a working out guy.

Again, who knew?

Lettuce discuss...
